Buying a used forklift requires careful consideration if you want to prevent buyer’s remorse. Make sure your checklist includes the following tips to safeguard your business against costly maintenance and repairs that could have been avoided in the first place.
Contact a reputable used forklift dealer
Know who you’re buying from. Although private sellers may sometimes offer you a sweeter deal than professional forklift dealers, a private person is often unable to provide a comprehensive repair history of the machine in question. Reputable forklift dealers, by contrast, will go out of their way to retrace the forklift’s history, so you can rest assured you’re not buying a pig in a poke.
Take it for a spin
Once you’ve gotten hold of the repair history, carefully read it through. Pay special attention to (recurring) repairs and major work done on the engine and other mechanical parts. If you’re still interested in buying the used forklift, ask the seller if you can inspect and test it first. The engine, tires, forks, mast, lift chains, … properly inspect the forklift from top to bottom – and then take it for a test drive. Don’t forget to mind your back!
Inspection
If you’re not familiar with forklift mechanics, take someone with you who is. Rest assured, though: each machine that leaves Nykei has been thoroughly inspected by an indepenant technician. If a forklift isn’t working the way it should, we don’t put it up for sale.
